Famous Golf Holes

The holes every golfer knows, painted by the only artist commissioned for both the U.S. Open and The Open.

Some golf holes are famous far beyond the people who have played them. Linda Hartough has painted many of them on site, over four decades of work that includes commissions from Augusta National, the USGA and The R&A. Here are some of them.

St Andrews: the Swilcan Bridge and the Road Hole

On the Old Course, players cross the Swilcan Burn on the small stone Swilcan Bridge on the way up the 18th, one of the most photographed places in golf. The 17th, the Road Hole, plays over the corner of the Old Course Hotel to a green with a deep pot bunker in front and a road and stone wall behind.

Augusta National: Amen Corner

Amen Corner is the stretch of the 11th, 12th and 13th holes along Rae's Creek. The par-3 12th, Golden Bell, plays over the creek to a shallow green, and the 13th, Azalea, is the hole Augusta National commissioned Linda to paint in 1984, the commission that changed her career.

Royal Troon, Pebble Beach and beyond

The 8th at Royal Troon, the Postage Stamp, is the shortest hole on The Open rota. At Pebble Beach, the little 7th drops toward the ocean and the 18th curves along Carmel Bay. Harbour Town's 18th runs along Calibogue Sound to the lighthouse, the 9th at Royal County Down looks out to the Mountains of Mourne, and the 18th at Pinehurst No. 2 is where Payne Stewart holed the putt that won the 1999 U.S. Open.

Amen Corner

Amen Corner

The year 1958 was eventful at the Masters Tournament. Two bridges across Rae’s Creek were dedicated in honor of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. A young pro named Arnold Palmer won the tournament for the first time. And Amen Corner was born. Actually, the famous stretch of golf holes — Nos. 11, 12 and 13 at Augusta National Golf Club — had been in existence for 25 years. But a catchy nickname for the three holes didn’t exist until Herbert Warren Wind, the golf writer for Sports Illustrated, came up with the term to describe the action in 1958.
